You could boil classes down into one grab-bag of things, point buys and stat grabs. Pull them up/back to the 90s. Let the fighter cast spells, the rogues be useful, and on and on.
But then we end up with a exhaustingly dull pile of choices that D&D 3/4/5.
Choices do not have to be especially meaningful to be enjoyable, choices are fun, but when it's from a list of 100 incremental doodads they really aren't.
These thoughts have caused me to reassess my battle with clerics. Why am I removing them? It's because they, in their current state, are silly.
